History: Art and architecture resources have always been an important part of the University Library collections. The early art collection was part of the Central Library Collection and architecture books were part of the Engineering Library. However in 1925 the School of Applied Arts was formed and pertinent materials from the Engineering Library were transferred to create a library to support the new school, which offered courses in architecture, landscape architecture and interior decoration. Subsequent expansion brought in programs in art education, ceramics, and art in industry, costume design, and general art. In 1946, the school became the College of Applied Arts and in subsequent years dropped the landscape architecture degree, began a planning option, and established a design department. In 1958, the Library moved to a new location in 800 Alms Building. The name of the college changed in 1962 to the College of Design, Architecture and Art, and degrees were added in community planning and art history. In 1979, the graduate Department of Community Planning was added to the Urban Design Program. In 1981, programs in Community Health Planning/Administration and Urban Administration/Studies were added to the college upon the dissolution of the College of Community Services with a small portion of materials transferred from the Central Library. In 1982, the college's name was changed to become the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning. In 1993, the Library assumed responsibility for the College slide collection of over 200,000 slides as part of an effort to integrate collections and services in the then planned new library. Renamed the Visual Resources Center, its current collection contains a wide variety of formats including CD-ROM, digital images, and computer software. Visual materials play an essential role in teaching of art and all disciplines. Today, the emphasis in collections and use is not as much the 35 mm slide format, but the digital collection, both purchased locally and through the OhioLINK Digital Media Center. The Aronoff for Design and Art, designed by leading American architect Peter Eisenman, was opened in 1996. The DAAP Library provides ample study and research space, as well as integrates both print and visual resources.
Special collections:
Emile Mâle: The collection consists of over 1000 items from the personal library of noted French art historian, Emile Mâle. The publications focus on Byzantine and medieval art history. Most of the publications are written in the French language and reflect Mâle's significant contributions to twentieth century art history. For additional information on Emile Mâle, consult the Dictionary of Art Online. This collection is available for local library use only.
Artists' Books: The artists' book collection consists
of several hundred special books representing local, national and international
book artists. The collection contains many examples of fine binding
and book illustration. In addition many of the books are narratives of artists
and reflect the artistic movements of the 1970s and 1980s. The DAAP
Library acquires examples of works of book art in order to provide a rounded
view of contemporary attitudes towards the book and to support the studio
courses in the College. The collection is available for local study and consultation;
however, it is necessary to make an appointment to view the collection.
