Recommending Purchases for the Library - Information for Faculty
All
faculty are encouraged to submit requests for purchase of publications and
other resources for the DAAP Library. Please use this guide to assist
in the process.
Funding: DAAP Library receives an allocation of funds each fiscal year to cover purchases in several major categories:
General : funds in this category cover the purchase of all new publications, out-of-print publications, and specialized materials such as exhibition catalogs and artists' books as well as some multimedia resources and visual resources
Serials - this fund is fixed based on our current subscriptions (totaling about 400 titles) New serials may be added, but keep in mind that funding would have to be moved from general funds
Gifts : DAAP has several small gift accounts to cover purchases in specialized areas as designated by the donor.
Media Endowment : University Libraries has special funding that DAAP may use for the purchase of selected multimedia titles
Coverage
and automatic receipt of titles:
The Library establishes what is termed approval accounts with several vendors to facilitate automatic receipt of new publications in various subject areas. For example, DAAP Library will automatically receive all new titles of major art and architecture publishers, all University Press books (in areas covered by DAAP curriculum) as well as a selected number of exhibition catalogs from North America's major museums. (A list of all publishers is available via email for your review)
However, areas that are more reliant on specialized trade and professional association publications are not covered as much in the list of major publishers and therefore it is important to have your input and suggestions
Foreign language publishers are not covered on approval accounts
Multidisciplinary titles are often purchased by another department (for example business purchases packaging materials or some ID materials) and those publications may be shelved in another library
Please keep in mind that every effort is made to purchase resources in an equitable manner, supporting all the diverse programs of the College
How to request items:
Email requests for specific titles to jane.carlin@uc.edu
If you are planning a new course, it is very helpful to share your course outline or syllabus with the Librarian prior to the course being offered - this way we can prepare in advance by acquiring materials to support the curriculum
How can you help us?
When you see a book or periodical at a museum or bookstore, note the title or the ISBN and let us know
When browsing in the stacks, please inform us of older or out-of date subject areas that we might review for currency
Feel free to leave publishers catalogs or notes for us to check
Keeping you informed about new publications:
Each month, a new acquisitions list is created and sent to you via email. The list is also available on the DAAP web site in the "What's New in DAAP Library" section. This list provides an up-to-date listing of recently acquired resources
It is possible, through our vendors, to provide you with an electronic list of titles to be published. You may recommend titles from this list for purchase and if you are interested in revceiving this on a monthly basis - please respond to the questions at the end of this document
