Summer 2007 Newsletter

New Book Lists for books received since the last newsletter can be found at http://www.libraries.uc.edu/libraries/ceas/books/index.html.

What's new?

  • Metasearching is here! in beta version. Betasearch allows you to search several databases at once. There is a subset of databases for Engineering, Computer Science & Mathematics. This subset represents but a few of the 150 science and engineering databases available at UC, but it does include the major, general databases such as Compendex and Scopus. Try it out!

  • Check out the Electronic Book Center at OhioLINK with 5,000 e-books from Oxford and Springer! We are putting links in the UC library catalog for our books to avoid the two-step look-up.

  • We have access to thousands of other online books from Knovel, SPIE, CRC Press, Elsevier, Safari, and Morgan & Claypool. Most of these are linked in the UC library catalog. See Books Online on the Engineering Library web page for links to these collections. Each collection has an interface for searching across all the books in the collection.

  • Several faculty are using texts that happen to be online. Check the collection to see if yours are online. Or check the Books Online selection to see if an online book would work for your course. Think of the dollars saved for students, a la the recent news article! Not to mention the competition for library reserve copies.

  • Speaking of reserves: the Engineering library is moving away from providing e-reserves for personal files, lecture notes, problems, solutions, powerpoint presentations, and other scanned material. Instead we plan that faculty will make good use of Blackboard, where students can have access to their course materials all in one place. Check the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning (CETL) for information on Blackboard workshops. If you need help with this transition, contact Dorothy Byers.

  • Wondering about Copyright? Dorothy has a supply of brochures from the Association of Research Libraries entitled "Know Your Copy Rights." Email Dorothy for a hard copy, or visit the ARL web site to download a free copy. See also local web sites on copyright:
    • Basic Information on Copyright
    • Copyright Assistance

  • The OhioLINK Digital Media Center (DMC) has a new look. If you are linking to any of its resources, such as the Landsat 7 images or Physics Demonstration videos, you may want to check and make sure they haven't changed.

  • Links to digital versions of dissertations and theses from 1955-1996 have now been added to the UC library catalog. Access to the entire collection is available at Proquest Dissertations and Theses.

What else is happening?

  • The Engineering Library migrated last fall from engrlib.uc.edu to libraries.uc.edu/libraries/engr. The annual report for 2006-2007 shows a significant drop in the use of the web site following the migration. Be sure to book mark the page for access to resources and services designed for Engineering.

  • The use of engineering databases, especially Compendex, has dropped dramatically (50%) over the last two years. Visit the UC Engineering Library Blog to participate in a discussion on this phenomenon.

  • Contact Dorothy or Jim for instruction opportunities!
