Exercise: http://www.libraries.uc.edu/libraries/ceas/instruction/classes/other/retreuexercise2011.html

What you need to know about ACCESS:

  • Due to licensing agreements certain library resources are restricted to UC faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students.
  • To access resources from off-campus, or outside the campus network, you must login through the University’s Central Login Service. See the following link: http://www.libraries.uc.edu/information/access.html

Contacts:

  • If you have questions with access, please contact:

Ted Baldwin, College of Engineering & Applied Science (CEAS) Library 556-4211 or ted.baldwin@uc.edu

Jim Clasper, College of Engineering & Applied Science (CEAS) Library 556-1452 or jim.clasper@uc.edu

Find CEAS Library on Facebook: Facebook.com/CEASLibrary  Join Us On Facebook

Where to Start:

The University of Cincinnati Libraries’ College of Engineering & Applied Science (CEAS) Library website offers detailed information about resources and services available in science and engineering. Through the website, you can access the Library Catalog, electronic full-text resources, links to valuable web resources, and contact information for CEAS Library staff who can help you find what you need. Check it out at http://www.libraries.uc.edu/libraries/ceas.  This workshop guide is found at: http://www.libraries.uc.edu/libraries/ceas/instruction/classes/other/retreu2011.html

Finding BOOKS via the library catalog and through online databases:

  • The University of Cincinnati Libraries’ Catalog is the primary source for information about the libraries collection – see http://uclid.uc.edu
  • The Library Catalog can be searched by author, title, keyword, subject, or call #.
  • The Library Catalog not only provides information about UC’s collection, but it provides the local gateway to OhioLINK. See more information about OhioLINK below.
  • The Library Catalog also allows you to manage your library account – view your checked out items, renew books, and review and cancel holds in your name. See the following link: https://uclid.uc.edu/patroninfo~S39/
  • See search tips online. http://uclid.uc.edu/screens/tips/index.html
    • Use AND, OR, and AND NOT to relate words within a search
    • Use keyword to drill in and subject headings to expand out
    • Use keywords to find conferences, or author if you know the name of the conference
    • Use variant forms of a society when searching (e.g., EERC or Earthquake Engineering Research Center)
    • Request books from other libraries using the Request button
    • Try OhioLINK for books not available at UC  http://olc1.ohiolink.edu/search/
    • Save/store records, then view these to format and export
    • Consider using RefWorks for organizing references: www.refworks.com or look under Express Links on CEAS Library website
  • The E-Books (Books Online) http://www.libraries.uc.edu/libraries/ceas/selfhelp/bksonline.html and Proceedings Online http://www.libraries.uc.edu/libraries/ceas/resources/proconline.html offer other ways to search for books and proceedings when you don't know the title or publisher, or when e-books/e-proceedings are not linked through the catalog.  The ability to search across entire collections of thousands of books and proceedings can be a powerful research tool.  Some of the available e-book and e-proceedings collections in science and engineering are:
    • ASCE Proceedings
    • CRCnetBASE
    • IEEExplore
    • Knovel
    • MRS Proceedings Library
    • OhioLINK Electronic Book Center (EBC)
    • Proquest Dissertations and Theses
    • Referex (Elsevier)
    • ScienceDirect books from Elsevier

Where to find information on the WEB:

  • Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.com) enables you to search for scholarly literature from all areas of research, and create email alerts that track new results.
  • Use Google Scholar to find articles from a wide variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, and scholarly articles available across the web.
  • If you are unable to access the full-text of the item, please check with the library. You may need to log in for off-campus access through the University’s Central Login Service.

Where to find RESEARCH ARTICLES -- General:

  • Computer and Applied Science Complete (CASC) – database of more than 1,800 academic journals, professional publications, and reference sources from a diverse collection.  Full Text available for many periodicals. Subject areas include engineering disciplines, computer theory & systems, new technologies, and social & professional issues. Cited references are searchable for key journals. Coverage of titles varies. http://search.ebscohost.com/login.asp?profile=web&defaultdb=iih

  • COMPENDEX (Engineering Index) – EI Village version of COMPENDEX covers 1884 to the present in one database.  It provides abstracts and full bibliographic citations for worldwide engineering and technical literature and encompasses all engineering disciplines, as well as related fields in science and management. The records in the database are drawn from over 2,600 published journals, conference proceedings, individual conference papers, technical reports, monographs, and other materials. http://www.engineeringvillage.com/controller/servlet/Controller?CID=quickSearch&database=1

  • Scopus – indexing, abstracting, and citation searching database for science and social science scholarly literature. Includes quality web sources, conference proceedings, and trade publications. Indexes 14,500 peer-reviewed journal and 1200 open-access journals, 575 trade publications, 315 book series, 23 million patent records, and 43 million webpages. Coverage dating from 1823. Other Resources:

  • Summon - Summon is a Google-like tool that searches across multiple UC library-subscribed resources and the library catalog at once.  CAUTION: Summon is a very good tool for the casual searcher, but serious researchers, in order to ensure that their library research is as comprehensive as possible, should still utilize the important bibliographic and full text databases for their subject areas.  This tool remains under development and at this time does not include most full-text resources for conference papers and many other items located in our bibliographic (non full-text) databases.

  • Full-Text Journals - the “Full Text Journals” tool provides links to full-text options for articles, from a variety of library-subscribed sources. The tool may be utilized in two ways: (1) direct search by journal title, ISSN, or other journal information, and (2) browsing an alphabetical list by the first letter of the journal title. http://aj2vr6xy7z.search.serialssolutions.com/ This tool is integrated with most library-subscribed databases, and is typically indicated by this icon: Artcile Linker icon

  • OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center (EJC) - the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center (EJC) is a statewide collection of scientific, technical and medical electronic journals. The EJC includes more than 6,000 journal titles from upwards of 80 publishers, including Academic Press, Elsevier, Springer-Verlag, Wiley, Kluwer, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American Chemical Society, American Physical Society, Institute of Physics, MCB, and BioOne. http://journals.ohiolink.edu/

Now that you’ve found your articles – MANAGE YOUR INFORMATION:

  • RefWorks - an online research management, writing and collaboration tool. It will help you gather, manage, store and share all types of information, as well as generate citations and bibliographies. It is similar in concept to EndNote, but is web-based, allowing you to access it from anywhere. University of Cincinnati Libraries makes this product available free of charge for all University of Cincinnati faculty and staff. More instruction and assistance with RefWorks available at http://www.libraries.uc.edu/services/tech_services/refworks.html. http://www.refworks.com

  • Many professional societies and publishers prescribe a certain format for citations in their publications.  For this class, refer to the example citation formats from the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE). http://www.libraries.uc.edu/libraries/ceas/instruction/classes/civil/asceform.html
