I. BOOKS

A. The UC Library Catalog (formerly called UCLID), is the record of books, conferences, journals and documents owned by all University of Cincinnati libraries.

  1. Search by author, title, subject or keyword search.
  2. If you don't find the book with an author search, double check with a title or keyword search. Patrons sometimes have an incorrect title or misspell the author's name.
  3. The UC Library Catalog will give the location, call number, and status of an item. Locations for the CEAS Library include CEAS Stacks, CEAS C.U. Collection, CEAS Storage, CEAS Reading Room, CEAS Reference, CEAS Ref Historical, CEAS Ref Index, CEAS Ref Dictnry, CEAS Ref Storage, CEAS Quick Reference, CEAS Reserves, CEAS Reserves Perm, CEAS Journals, CEAS Cur Per, CEAS Reading Room, CEAS A-V Coll, CEAS Microforms, CEAS Oversize, CEAS Work Area, CEAS Librarian's Office, and SW Depository for items in storage.
  4. The library has access to many electronic books. Some are linked in the library catalog, but many others are only accessible through a vendor's web site (e.g., Knovel, CRCnetBASE, IEEE Press, Referex, ScienceDirect, Safari, OhioLINK Electronic Book Center (EBC), and National Academies Press). See Books Online on the CEAS Library web site for examples of online book collections relevant to engineering. Note the companion resource called Proceedings Online for conference proceedings.
  5. Summon is a Google-like search tool used to identify books and other resources available in the UC libraries electronic and print collections. Use with caution since many of the CEAS Library resources are still being added to Summon.

B. Steps in helping patron locate a book:

  1. If the book is checked out, the patron may place a hold on it at the Circulation Desk with the call number, or search and request the book from the OhioLINK catalog. Also, try SearchOhio to see if your book might be available through the public library service. If the needed book will NOT be available in the UC Library Catalog/OhioLINK Catalog/SearchOhio Catalog for some time, a regular ILL (ILLIAD) request may be made (except for textbooks). Use ILLIAD for ILL.
  2. Requested books which couldn't be found should have their status changed by a staff member to "missing" so that the patron can request the book from OhioLINK. Also, missing books are searched on a regular basis.

II. JOURNALS (periodicals, magazines)

A. The UC Library Catalog lists many journals held by all University of Cincinnati libraries. The UC Library Catalog records for journals include information about the library's holdings, publication history and the bibliographic record. The check-in record will show when the latest print issue has arrived, or is expected to arrive. In cases where there is an electronic version, a link may exist on the UCLID journal record. It is also wise to check "Full_Text Journals" (Serials Solutions) to determine if other electronic access is available for a journal.

B. Helping locate a journal we are supposed to have:

  1. Search shelves
    a. Locations:

UNBOUND
periodicals in the Quiet Study Room (Baldwin 850J).
staff workroom (860 Baldwin)

BOUND
1985-most recently bound year: Upper Stacks in CEAS Library. Most journals are available full-text online. In addition to the catalog, remember to check "Full Text Journals".
before 1985 : In storage at SW Depository (SWORD)

NOTE: many volumes after 1984 are in the SW Depository (SWORD), if the journal is available electronically.

NOTE: sometimes we have lost electronic access to recent volumes that are in SWORD. Always check the UC Library Catalog item locations for each requested volume; DON'T ASSUME.

b. Order on shelves:

By title alphabetically for unbound titles

By call number for bound titles

c. Check book collection under call number in case journal volume was misshelved.

2. If not on shelves, check the UC Library Catalog to make sure we have the journal and date requested, and check the location. In some cases volumes more recent than 1984 are in storage at SW Depository.

III. CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS

A. Patrons looking for conference papers will need to locate the conference in the collection. Many proceedings of conferences and seminars are shelved with the books or CD-ROMS in call number order.

  1. To find a conference, do a keyword search in the UC Library Catalog using unique key words from the name of the whole conference (not the title of a paper presented there).
  2. Most conference proceedings have the same call number (but not always) for every year, so they can all be found together on the shelf.

B. Many conference proceedings in the CEAS Library are available on microfiche or electronically.

  1. The conferences on microfiche are identified by a microfiche number rather than a Library of Congress call number, and are located in the microfiche cabinets at the south end of the library.
  2. Many electronic conferences are NOT cataloged in the UC Library Catalog. Examples of such conferences are the recent IEEE/IET, ASCE, SPIE, AIAA, and Trans Tech conferences.

If a particular conference is NOT found in the UC Library Catalog/OhioLINK Catalog, ask the Assistant Engineering & Applied Science Librarian or have the patron fill out an ILLIAD request form.
