SEARCHING FOR MUSIC SCORES IN UCLID
Although searches for scores can sometimes be complicated, mainly due to the way in which music has been published-e.g., full scores and piano-vocal scores of works, arrangements, works that have appeared under various titles, works buried in collections and anthologies, etc.-most searches are straightforward. The following instructions apply to such a search:
You are looking for a copy of the piano-vocal score of Puccini's La Boheme . The main UCLID menu appears before you and looks like this:

Since the one we are interested in is the one who lived from 1858 to 1924, click on the second name. The next screen displays the first 12 items of a list of all works by Puccini in the Library-scores, sound recordings, videos, and books (if any books were written by Puccini).

You may go through the list at this point if you wish. Since you are looking for a piano-vocal score, however, it would be more efficient to LIMIT this list to just scores. You can limit your search by clicking on the limit/sort bar and selecting music scores from "other material types" or by selecting music scores form the drop down menu next to the search bar.

You can limit your search further by clicking on the limit/sort bar and typing the title in the appropriate space. Type "boheme" (omitting the initial article "La"). The list will consist of both full scores and piano-vocal scores. The piano-vocal scores are identified in the list.
The more efficient way of performing this search would have been to click on the limit/sort bar and on this one screen limit to music score and the title "Boheme."

A title search usually works well for works with distinctive titles, like La Boheme, Till Eulenspiegel, et. Title searches work less well for works with the type of composition as part of the title, e.g., Symphony no.4, Sonata for piano, etc., and are, therefore, not recommended.
Remember that in limiting a search, you may also limit by the year of publication, or even the publisher. The latter can be especially helpful when looking for a particular edition.
You may also do a subject search (in music, more properly thought of as form or medium). You may enter a subject heading of your own devising (and hope that this heading is recognized by UCLID), or you may consult the bookMusic Subject Headings compiled from Library of Congress Subject Headings, by Perry Bratcher, which is available at each public terminal area. The subject heading applied to the piano-vocal score of La Boheme is OPERAS-VOCAL SCORES WITH PIANO. Normally, one wouldn't use a subject heading when looking for a particular work, but, when determining what books or scores the library owns in a particular subject area, they can be very useful.
