HOW TO FIND MATERIALS ON ELECTRONIC MEDIA IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES
If you know the specific author and title of the book that you need, the best way to find it is by an author or title search in the online catalog ( UCLID)
If you are looking for books on a specific topic, a subject search is the best approach. This system uses Library of Congress subject headings. Although your division is called Electronic Media, there are no books in the Library under this subject. Following is a brief list of Library of Congress subject headings for your area that are used by the UC Library:
BROADCASTING (and subdivisions, e.g., BROADCASTING- AUTHORSHIP)
TELEVISION (and subdivisions, e.g., TELEVISION--ADVERTISING)
RADIO (and subdivisions, e.g., RADIO ANNOUNCING)
You will also be led to related headings, such as BROADCAST JOURNALISM or PUBLIC BROADCASTING. Once you have come up with a list of books pertinent to your subject, you may limit that list to a year, or range of years, in order to pare the list down to recently published books. These books will be found mainly in the CCM Library, but some may be found in the Langsam Library, the DAAP Library, and branch campus libraries. For example, most of the books in the area of advertising will be found in Langsam. Materials pertinent to broadcast law will be in the Law Library. Yours is a multi-disciplinary field and will, therefore, overlap with the areas of business, communications, and law.
OhioLINK--Naturally, the Library does not own every book published. Other Ohio libraries may have books that would be useful to your research. OhioLINK is a consortium of mainly State colleges and university libraries, whose catalog holdings are centralized in a database located at Wright State University. You have access to this database through any UCLID terminal. If you find material that you can use in the OhioLINK central catalog, you may borrow it directly from that terminal. If available, the item will be delivered to the CCM Library within five business days.
Periodicals. In doing research on a particular topic, you will not only wish to determine what books the Library owns on this topic but also if there have been periodical articles written about it. Remember that UCLID can tell you what volumes of a particular periodical the Library owns, but it cannot tell you what the contents of each volume are. There are a number of different sources you can use to find articles on particular topic, or by a particular author.
