HOW TO FIND MATERIALS ON THE DANCE
IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

1. You may use either the "Telnet" or "Web" version of the online catalog (UCLID) for doing searches. If you wish to download UCLID records to your email account, then perhaps importing them to a word processing program, you will choose the Web version. In either version, if you know the specific author or title of the book that you need, the best way to find it is by an author or title search in UCLID.

2. If you are looking for books on a specific topic, a subject search is the best approach. This system uses Library of Congress subject headings. Following is a short list of Library of Congress subject headings in the area of the dance that are used by the UC Library:

BALLET
BALLETS
CHOREOGRAPHY
DANCE
DANCE NOTATION

and names of specific persons or ballet companies, like

CUNNINGHAM, MERCE

        or

NEW YORK CITY BALLET

These subject headings will also lead the user to related subjects, like DANCING, PANTOMIME, GESTURE IN DANCE , etc.

Most materials of interest will be found in the CCM Library, but books on design and costuming may be found in the DAAP Library.

3. OhioLINK --Naturally, the Library does not own every book on the dance published. Other libraries may have books that would be useful to you. OhioLINK is a consortium of mainly State college and university libraries whose catalog holdings are centralized. You have access to OhioLINK through any library workstation or home computer that has access to the Internet. Once in the OhioLINK database, you may borrow books from other libraries directly from that workstation or personal computer. If available, the item will be delivered to the CCM Library within five business days.

4. Videos and sound recordings --These materials are cataloged in the same way as books and music scores but will have an additional access point--the performers, or performing group, e.g., Royal Danish Ballet. It is suggested that you perform a title or author (composer) search for the work you would like to see or hear, then select LIMIT to reduce your list to just videotapes or sound recordings.

5. Periodicals --in doing research on a particular topic, you will not only wish to determine what books the Library owns on this topic but also if there have been periodical articles written about it. Remember that UCLID can tell you whether or not the Library owns a particular periodical, and which volumes it holds, but it cannot tell you what the contents of each volume are. There are a number of different sources you can use to find articles on a topic, or by a particular author. Handouts are available for using some of the following. On-screen instructions and help screens are always available. For additional information consult our user guide Finding Articles in Periodicals.
