Finding Articles in Music Periodicals and Other Print Resources
The online catalog (UCLID) does not provide citations to individual articles; one must go to other sources. The following resources are available online..
Music Index. is the primary index to periodical literature in music. It indexes over 700 journals. It is available online for the years 1979-present. For articles written prior to 1979, one must consult the printed volumes in the reading room on the index table. These go back to 1949, the year Music Index began.
International Index to Music periodicals (IIMP) provides access to tens of thousands of articles published in more than 400 international journals every year. It is available online for with articles dating as far back as 1874. It includes full text articles as well as citations.
RILM Abstracts covers the years 1969 to date and provides abstracts to articles, books, dissertations, reviews, etc. Its coverage of periodical literature is necessarily less broad than Music Index or IIMP . In order to use RILM Abstracts , one must first go to UCLID-either the Telnet or the Web version. The Web version is recommended because one can tag and download articles and abstracts to an e-mail account, then import to a word processing program. This is handy for compiling bibliographies. It should be kept in mind that RILM Abstracts does not provide full-text documents-only abstracts of articles, etc.
Newspaper Abstracts provides abstracts for articles from 35 U.S. newspapers and is updated weekly. The coverage is 1989 to date. It is useful for finding music and concert reviews, interviews, etc. To restrict your serach to newspapers, be sure to change the database setting from "multiple" to "ProQuest Newspapers."
