Library Instruction Options
The CAS Library offers a variety of instruction programs and services for students, staff and faculty. Because of varying needs, we offer an array of instruction options - one or more options can be used as appropriate. To discuss your instruction needs, schedule an instruction session, or arrange a library tour/orientation, please contact Ted.Baldwin@uc.edu.
Examples of topics that can be covered through library instruction:
- General overview of information sources and library services available at UC
- Overview of basic reference and research materials
- Effective search techniques for general and specialized research databases, such as Academic Search Premier, Compendex, CRCNetBase, Knovel, Scifinder Scholar, and Scopus
- Basics of using audiovisual equipment and multimedia software in the CAS Library Info Commons
Instruction delivery options
- Classroom lecture/demonstration: Best for larger classes
- Hands-on instruction in the library (held in CAS Library Classroom 304 or CAS Library Info Commons): Best for smaller classes (25 students or fewer); provides highest level of guided hands-on experience
- Librarian co-instructor/TA on Blackboard course: Best for class requiring ongoing assistance with locating information; librarian can post resource guides and highlight additional sources and services as needed
- Course research guide/pathfinder: Can post to Blackboard site or CAS Library Web site; best when used in conjunction with hands-on library instruction session
- One-on-one student consultations with librarian: Most direct and personalized form of assistance; very effective for in-depth research projects
For more details on instruction options, please consult the University Libraries' Instruction page. In addition, general library workshops are also offered throughout the academic year and online assistance is available 24/7 via the University Libraries Help pages and chat reference service.
