This site provides access to resources that support the Chemical Technology students of the College of Applied Science.

Note: If you are accessing library resources from off-campus, you need to log in for Off Campus Access. Most of the resources on the library's Web site are restricted to authorized UC users only.

Locating Library Resources

Use UCLID (UC’s Library Catalog) to locate books, periodicals, videos, and other materials owned by UC, and the OhioLINK catalog for items owned by other Ohio college and university libraries.

From the catalog menu, select KEYWORD and initiate your search using your topic terms (phrase, company, personal name, chemical). KEYWORD searches for words across the title, series title, organization, association, content notes, publisher, and subject.

For a more focused search, select SUBJECT and initiate your search using a Library of Congress subject term (subject, place name or personal name). Relevant examples of subject headings are:

Use the LIMIT/SORT button to limit your results to "CAS Library" or "Electronic Resources" or other options. Use the REQUEST button to order materials listed as available at other UC libraries.

If you don’t find the items you want in UCLID, search the OhioLINK Catalog, a library network of Ohio college and university catalogs. Click OhioLINK CENTRAL button to enter the database, search and request materials.

Senior Design Reports

Copies of past Chemical Technology senior design reports are held in the library. See our senior design reports page for more information.

Reference Resources:

Reference resources in the Library are useful for selecting topics, quick descriptions, and general information. These include general and specific encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, almanacs, etc. Most reference resources are only in print format and can only be used in the library. Some are available online and linked below.

ACS Style Guide. CAS Reference QD8.5 .A25
A handbook from the American Chemical Society on citing sources and writing chemical research. Details on citation formats and creating bibliographies is also available online.

AccessScience Articles and dictionary terms from the 8th edition of the McGraw-Hill encyclopedia of science and technology, with new and revised content from the encyclopedia's editors and contributors, including recent research developments, biographies of scientists, late-breaking science and technology news, new references, links to related web sites, learning resources and study guides, added illustrations, and much more.

Science Online Presents basic information from reference materials (i.e. encyclopedias and dictionaries) on a broad range of scientific discipline through extensive definitions, essays, diagrams, biographies, and experiments.

Chemical Processing Handbook Online handbook on processing operations in the chemical industry. Originally published as the print volume Chemical Processing and Design Handbook.

CRC handbook of chemistry and physics Online or CAS Reference QD65 .C4.
Ready reference book for chemical and physical data.

Kirk-Othmer concise encyclopedia of chemical technology CAS Reference TP9 .K54
Covers the latest developments in chemical technology and related fields. Features include dynamic table of contents and online index; separate windows for text, tables, figures, and bibliography; and hyperlinked references.

Lange's Handbook of Chemistry Online or CAS Reference QD65 .L362

Merck Index. CAS Reference RS51 .M4
A one-volume compendium of information on the most important chemicals, drugs and biological substances, for quick and reliable answers to questions. The entries give chemical information, foreign patent information, references, and information as to use, cautions, and therapeutic categories.

Perry’s Chemical Engineers’ Handbook Online or CAS Reference TP151 .P45
Authoritative and comprehensive standard reference with facts, figures, methods and data useful for engineers in the field.

Riegel's handbook of industrial chemistry. CAS Reference TP145 .R54
One volume source for an overview on varied chemical processes, products and practices. Some detailed data on the chemistry, engineering, economics and technological infrastructure of all major chemical industry segments.

Rules of thumb for chemical engineers. CAS Reference TP151 .R85
This volume helps solve design, operations, and equipment problems that chemical engineers face daily in the field and presents practical, how-to methods with its hundreds of techniques, shortcuts, and calculations.

Electronic Books

Note: Many electronic books can be found in the UC Library Catalog.

CRCNetBase Online access to full-text technical handbooks and reference books in all areas of science. Information includes specialized data, figures, and equations critical to Chemistry, Pharmacology, and Polymers.

EnviroNetBase Full-text searchable books covering environmental science.

Knovel Electronic databooks and reference books in all areas of science and engineering, including biochemistry, chemistry, environmental science, metals, plastics, and safety/health. Many charts and tables are interactive, allowing for tailored searching of specific data.

Journals & Magazines

Journals & Magazines can be used to keep up with the latest developments in a field and gain important first-hand details on research.

Useful periodical titles can be found by searching the UC Library Catalog with the selected SUBJECTS or KEYWORDS, then using LIMIT/SORT to choose PERIODICALS/SERIALS (from the OTHER MATERIAL TYPES drop down menu).

UC Libraries Full-Text Journal Finder
Search by journal title or ISBN to locate electronic copies of magazines and journals in UC-subscribed resources, including the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center.

Selected chemistry periodicals:

American Chemical Society journals Major publisher of chemistry-related journals. UC has a subscription to the full-text of all ACS journals, from volume 1 to the present.

OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center Many more scholarly research journals available online here.

Article Databases

Article databases assist the user in finding ARTICLES WITHIN PERIODICALS. There are different types of databases that include articles from many different kinds of periodicals and publications. Choose your index first, then search by subject or keyword.

RefWorks is a tool for creating a personal web-based database of bibliographic citations. It is licensed for use by UC students and staff. Results may be imported from citations found in periodical databases.

Listed below are recommended databases for searching chemistry literature:

Scifinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts)

  • THE major database for locating chemistry-related literature and patents. SciFinder allows for searching by research topic, author, CA Registry number, structure, reaction, and more. Chemistry coverage includes: analytical, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, as well as biochemistry, and chemical engineering. Main coverage is literature from 1907 - present.
  • To access SciFinder Scholar, you will need to register and create your personal account. Once you have your account, you can sign in to SciFinder Scholar.
  • View a demonstration of SciFinder Scholar web version.
  • Scifinder Scholar Information/Tutorials -- How to guides on using the SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts) database searching system.

UC Libraries OneSearch - "metasearch" more than one database at the same time. Choose the "Chemistry & Physics" cluster.

Compendex - Database of international engineering and applied science literature in over 5000 journals, conference proceedings, and technical reports.

History of Science, Technology, and Medicine - Database of citations and abstracts for journal articles from over 1,000 journals, conference proceedings, books, book reviews, and dissertations in the history of science, technology and medicine. Includes historical treatment of all scientific disciplines, from astronomy to zoology.
