2004 marks the 30th
anniversary of the German-Americana Collection established by the
University Libraries in 1974. Now considered the major collection
of its kind, it consists of books, periodicals, pamphlets,
documents, and manuscripts relating to German-American history,
literature, and culture, and has provided the resources that have
led to numerous theses, dissertations, and publications. Originally
based on the private library of Heinrich Hermann Fick, Supervisor
of the German Department of the Cincinnati Public Schools, the
collection has grown considerably, especially by means of gifts of
private collections, including those from Gert Niers, editor of
two German-American newspapers published in New York: the New Yorker Staats-Zeitung and Aufbau, and most recently, that of Robert E. Cazden,
Professor of Library Science, University of Kentucky. Jerry Glenn,
U.C. Professor Emeritus of German, facilitated the gift of the
literary estate of German-American poet, Alfred Gong. The German-Americana Collection is of value to students, scholars, and the general public interested in the history, literature, and culture of the German-American element, and contains a wealth of information on the German heritage of the Ohio Valley in particular. Its location in the Archives and Rare Books Department of the University of Cincinnati Libraries is especially appropriate given the importance of the region in the history of German immigration and settlement since the 18th century. Some of the noteworthy holdings and persons in the history of the German-Americana Collection are highlighted by means of this exhibit. Die
Bibliothek der Universität Cincinnati hat wohl eine der grössten
und stärksten Sammlungen in deutscher Sprache in den USA.
Besonders wichtig für die Geschichte des deutschen Elements ist
die Deutsch-Amerikana-Sammlung. Der Kern dieser im Jahre 1974 von
der Universitätsbibliothek ins Leben gerufene Sammlung bildete
die Privatbibliothek von Prof. Dr. Heinrich Hermann Fick, Direktor
der Deutsch-Abteilung der öffentlichen Schulen von Cincinnati. Dank
einem Kollegen, Prof. Dr. Edwin Zeydel, dem Vorsitzenden der
Deutsch-Abteilung der Universität, kam diese Sammlung an die
Universität. Im Laufe der Jahre ist ihr Bestand auf das Zehnfache
angewachsen und kann damit heute zweifelsohne als der grösste
dieser Art bezeichnet werden. Unter
den Privatbibliotheken, die seit 1974 erworben werden konnten, ist
die von Gert Niers von besonderer Bedeutung. Er war Herausgeber
der New Yorker Staats-Zeitung sowie der deutsch-jüdischen
Zeitung Aufbau und sammelte Werke deutsch-amerikanischer
Schriftsteller aus der Exil- und Nachkriegszeit. Andere
Privatbibliotheken und Nachlässe sind hinzugekommen, darunter der
Nachlass des Dichters Alfred Gong. Erfreulicherweise
sind in den letzten Jahren viele Magisterarbeiten, Dissertationen
und andere Publikationen vollendet worden, die die reichhaltigen
Bestände der Deutsch-Amerikana-Sammlung beleuchten. Die Stadt Cincinnati, deren ansehnliches deutsches Element sich bis auf 1788 zurückverfolgen lässt, ist ein ebenso würdiger wie natürlicher Standort für eine solche Sammlung.
