Active participants in the athletic events boarded streetcars and automobiles for the drive out to the festplatz, situated at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds in Carthage, just north of the city along the Mill Creek.  At that time, Carthage was a busy little village of factories and small businesses.  Banners and flags with the Turners’ symbol decorated storefronts and lampposts.
