1938 postcard of St. George and surrounding area (collection of Kevin Grace, Archives and Rare Books)
Image and information provided by Marilyn Gallagher. This photo is of the 25th anniversary held at St. George’s for the St. Michal Youth organization, ca. 1910. Taken by Schoemer’s Art Studio, which was located at the southwest corner of Vine and Liberty Streets in Over-the-Rhine, the photographs shows the decorated and candlelit interior of this German-American church. Ms. Gallagher relates that her great grandparents were Henry and Mary Vonderhaar. They bought a house on Dennis Street, very close to St. George’s in Corryville, a neighborhood that was home to many German immigrants, including those who were moving up the hill from Over-the-Rhine and the West End in the early years of the 20th century. The Vonderhaars gave the house to their daughter and her husband, Mary and John Engelhart, who raised their five children there. The youngest daughter, Ms. Gallagher’s aunt, was the last resident of the home before that end of Dennis Street was enveloped by the University of Cincinnati’s expansion in the 1960s.
