The Nelson and Florence Hoffmann Cincinnati Postcard Collection |
|
Nelson Hoffman’s postcards, ephemera, and research all offer a unique view into Cincinnati’s past. Whether of an aerial view of Xavier’s campus in 1939 or of a Saturday afternoon in 1910 “Shooting the Chutes” in Chester Park, the images in this collection allow the viewer to experience multifarious moments in Cincinnati’s history. Those familiar with Cincinnati will quickly recognize that many of the buildings, amusements, and cultural practices documented in this collection have since vanished or have changed significantly. Those unfamiliar will gain invaluable insights into what shaped the Queen City and the American lifestyle throughout the 20th Century. Sample images from the collection, as well as a complete finding aid, can be found in this web exhibit. Though there are 1,675 Postcards in this collection only 80 have been included here. Interested researchers should call or visit the Archives and Rare Books Library for more information.
The Nelson and Florence Hoffmann Cincinnati Postcard Collection was donated to the Archives and Rare Books Library in 2011 by Florence Hoffmann.
