Susie Kauck, 59, was born in Southwest Ohio and raised in a household with strong Irish traditions. Kauck’s mother, Mary Louise Carter, was born in 1913 in O’Bryonville. O’Bryonville began as an Irish settlement in the 1830s. By 1870, the area was annexed by Cincinnati. Mary Louise was raised by her grandmother in a strong Irish household. Mary Louise’s grandmother would give the young girl a sweet baked potato to eat on her way to school during the winter. In the summer, the family would go to “Irish Day” at Coney Island. Mary Louise continued the appreciation of her Irish ties within her own household with her daughter, Susie. Susie’s mother would perform Irish dances around the house, and Susie would join in. Kauck would watch as her mother peeled potatoes. As Susie grew older, she and her mother would enjoy cooking together.
Even today, Kauck continues to keep her Irish roots alive through her food and lifestyle blog, Return to Sunday Supper. The purpose of the blog is to inspire readers to celebrate traditions as well as create new traditions by eating a Sunday meal together. Enjoying a meal together is essential to creating deeper relationships and happier homes. Daily, Kauck writes stories, tests recipes, and takes pictures for her blog. Susie focuses many of her blogs on her family history. Throughout the year, she posts many family stories and recipes on her blog that are reflective of her family’s Irish heritage. Especially before St. Patrick’s Day, Kauck fills her blog with posts about the meanings of Irish symbols, recipes for Irish soda bread, and thoughtful recollections of her mother and her Irish upbringing. In addition to blogging about Ireland and her Irish heritage, Susie Kauck writes about current events and recipes for the current season. In September 2012, Kauck wrote a tribute to Neil Armstrong. In August 2012, Kauck shared a recipe for “Corn on the Cob Popcorn.” With each blog, though, Susie ties in a personal story, many of which relate to her childhood.
Kauck currently lives in Chicago with her family. She enjoys traveling and learning about other cultures. In addition to finding recipes for her blog, Kauck enjoys yoga and antiquing.
