Jane Morris was in many ways the ideal pre-Raphaelite beauty. She was tall and thin, and had dramatic dark hair and eyes. Morris saw in her the essence of the beautiful heroines of his poems and paintings. However, it is clear from photographs of Jane that not everyone would find her beautiful; there is a severity to her appearance. It is clear that the Pre-Raphaelites idealized her in their work and softened this aspect of her look.
