While here, they engaged in activities designed to be entertaining while at the same time informative about the various research resources, assistance, and library services they can take advantage of when they return in the fall.

The free mobile device charging kiosk located in UCIT@Langsam allows students, faculty and staff to securely charge Apple and Android devices for free.

UC Information Technologies (UCIT) has partnered with the Office of the University Architect, Student Government and UC Libraries to place a mobile device charging station in UCIT@Langsam, the 24-hour computer and study space located on the 5th floor of Langsam Library.

The free-standing charging kiosk offers a total of nine key-coded lockers that provide the security of leaving phones or tablets while they charge. Seven lockers are compatible with Apple iPhones and Android phones, and two accommodate iPads or Android tablets.

“With nearly 38,000 devices accessing our wireless network every day, there is a significant demand to keep mobile devices charged up on-the-go,” said Nelson C. Vincent, vice president for information technology and CIO. “UCIT aims to meet this demand to keep all of our partners on campus –students, faculty and staff—charged and connected to the important work they do to propel the institution’s education and research agenda forward into UC’s third century.”

UCIT plans to install another kiosk in the Tangeman University Center food court in the coming weeks.

The first volume of Grimms’ Fairy Tales contained 86 stories, including such classic tales as Cinderella, Snow White, Rumpelstiltskin, The Frog Prince, Rapunzel, and Hansel and Gretel, among others. The second volume, published in 1814, contained 70 tales. Four more volumes would follow with fairy tales added and subtracted until the seventh, and final, volume was published in 1857, which held 211 tales.

Adapted countless times over the two centuries since its first publication, Grimms’ original fairy tales are much darker than the Disney versions popular today. The original Grimms’ Fairy Tales were widely criticized at the time for containing subject matter not suitable for children.

Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859), were German academics, linguists, and authors who together collected folklore. They are among the most well-known storytellers of European folk tales.

The exhibit, titled “The Brothers Grimm: 200 Years of Grimms’ Fairy Tales,” includes information on the Grimms’ legacy, their collaborative works, and the various versions and interpretations of the fairy tales. The exhibit was curated by Olga Hart, reference and instructional librarian, and designed by Communications’ Department student worker Alixandria Wolfe, a junior DAAP design student. A selected bibliography is available online and at the exhibit.

The exhibit is part of UC’s International Education Week festivities. A full event schedule is online.

The University of Cincinnati is one of six original OhioLINK members along with Miami University, Bowling Green State University, Central State University, Wright State University, and Case Western Reserve University. Throughout its 20 years, UC Libraries have been active partners in the various OhioLINK endeavors and we look forward to many more collaborations.

OhioLINK Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Shared Services
State’s Library and Information Network Benefits Students, Teachers, Researchers

COLUMBUS, OH, Nov. 1, 2012 – In today’s economy, the concept of shared services is more important than ever, but it’s been the backbone of OhioLINK for 20 years.

OhioLINK, the Ohio Library and Information Network, today celebrates 20 years of pooling resources to provide more than 600,000 college and university students, faculty and staff with access to millions of books and other library materials. OhioLINK is a consortium of 88 Ohio college and university libraries, plus the State Library of Ohio, that work together to provide information for teaching and research. OhioLINK’s membership includes 16 public/research universities, 23 community/technical colleges, 49 private colleges and the State Library of Ohio.

OhioLINK, a venture of university libraries and the Ohio Board of Regents, was created to provide a competitive advantage for Ohio’s higher education community by cooperatively and cost-effectively acquiring, providing access to and preserving an expanding array of print and digital resources, and by centrally hosting digital content. Together, OhioLINK and its member libraries provide access to 46.5 million books and other library materials, more than 100 electronic research databases, more than 81,000 e-books, thousands of images and videos, and millions of electronic journal articles.

“I can think of no better example of shared services than what OhioLINK has been doing for the past 20 years,” said Board of Regents Chancellor Jim Petro. “Shared services are vital to keep Ohio thriving, and OhioLINK clearly shows how the sharing of Ohio’s vast scholarly resources can give our students, teachers and researchers the tools to excel.”

OhioLINK grew out of a 1987 recommendation by the Board of Regents’ library committee that the State of Ohio “implement, as expeditiously as possible, a statewide electronic catalog system.” In 1992, six universities installed OhioLINK systems and began the ongoing process of building the central catalog. In 1996, OhioLINK began offering services through the World Wide Web.
