The students participated in fun and interactive activities such as writing on the information chalkboard, watching a video about the Student Technology Resources Center (STRC), located library resources in the catalog, and taking a walking tour of the 5th floor of the library where they found a book in the stacks and learned about UCit@Langsam, the 24-hour computer and study area.

“My name is Ashley Kraus and I am currently an English major in the LCS track here at the University of Cincinnati. This infographic was a project for my Rhetoric and Professional Writing class with Professor Laura Wilson, who allowed us to pick any topic we wanted. Since my career plans include going into library science, I felt it would be interesting to focus on information in that area. My main goal in creating this infographic was to provide UC students with some information about what the UC Libraries have to offer. There is great information and resources on the library website, so I incorporated links in the info graphic to provide quick access to that information. I enjoyed working on this project and am grateful to the Langsam Library staff for their help and recommendations.”

This first series will feature four outstanding undergraduate student presenters:

• Carrie Ertel a senior political science major will present her work regarding International Cooperation in the Area of Nuclear Non-Proliferation
• Amanda Bell is a senior majoring in both mathematics-statistics through McMicken College of Arts & Sciences and performance-clarinet through CCM. Amanda will present her work regarding Re-creating 18th Century Music using Statistical Inference
• Matthew Burke a junior biochemistry major will present his work on Combating Cancer Through the Development of  Anti-Tumor Agents
• Angelica Hardee a senior health education, public and community health major will present her work on a  the development of a Cultural Competency Toolkit for Employees of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

The event is free and open to the UC community and public. Faculty and students alike are encouraged to attend for an afternoon of refreshments and enlightening cross-disciplinary discussion. More information is available online.

African American Newspapers, 1827-1998 provides online access to approximately 270 U.S. newspapers chronicling a century and a half of the African American experience. This unique collection features papers from more than 35 states including many rare and historically significant 19th century titles. Newly digitized, these newspapers published by or for African Americans can now be browsed and searched as never before.

We got a variety of responses ranging from difficulty getting organized and pulling yourself away from Facebook or Pinterest to problems related to putting the results on paper and getting the research findings published.

To help our patrons to address some of these problems we put together a virtual exhibit Tips for Effective and Efficient Library Research. The exhibit features current e-books and print books from the UC Libraries’ collections related to various aspects of library research projects, from finding and evaluating sources to presenting your research results and getting them published. It also includes resources on successful management of your research projects.

While the books on finding sources are targeted primarily to undergraduates, books in other categories might be useful to broader audiences, including graduate and doctoral students and faculty.

We hope to expand this exhibit in the future by adding more online resources in a variety of formats.
