The Daniel Drake Archival Collection: An Introduction

Until now, the Daniel Drake Archival Collection at the Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions had been partially inventoried but all of our “Drakiana” had never been brought together in a cohesive collection. Since beginning my internship at the Winkler Center in October, I have been working on the compilation and organization of the materials and documents and I am coming to a close on the project. By the beginning of next year a finding aid will be made available through OhioLINK so that this collection will be searchable on the web. Continue reading →

A free trial to BMJ Case Reports until August 31, 2012 at http://casereports.bmj.com! BMJ Case Reports has published more than 2000 peer-reviewed cases making it the world’s largest repository of clinical cases online. The case reports published online cover over 32 specialties and topics.

The free trial to BMJ Case Reports entitles UC users to:

Submit an unlimited number of cases (Please note: requires a Fellowship code – contact edith.starbuck@uc.edu to request the code.)
Access over 2000 peer-reviewed case reports across all specialties
Reuse any of the published material for teaching and personal use without any further permission
Search published cases by specialty, type of case, patient demographics and date of publication

That’s especially true when you are on campus. But when you’re off campus, the OhioLINK authentication process may slow down the ease of access.

Access Tip: bypass the OhioLINK authentication process by logging into the UC proxy server instead, then go to OhioLINK.

If UC does not have the article you want, request it through ILLiad, the online request system.

Benefits:

Login using your UC central login.
Fill out a profile once and ILLiad will supply your information for all future requests
Able to track requests by logging into ILLiad
Able to revise citations and re-submit requests, or cancel requests electronically
Able to request an article on the spot when searching a database via the UC Article Linker button.

New digital work: The Spanish Antiphoner

The Spanish Antiphoner

The Spanish Antiphoner is a 16th century choirbook containing Gregorian chant handwritten on vellum pages approximately 16 by 23.6 inches in neumatic notation with illuminated text capitals. The digital edition offers multiple resolutions and formats providing a close-up view of this rare illuminated manuscript.

The Eugene Ruehlmann Papers Show the Dramatic Changes in Cincinnati in the 1960s

The 1960s were a tumultuous time in American history, and the city of Cincinnati was not immune to the changes during this decade. Riots displayed the city’s difficult race relations, the Bengals brought professional football to the city, Riverfront Stadium was built and changed the layout of the riverfront, and the city of Cincinnati grappled with urban renewal. Each of these events is documented in the papers of Eugene Ruehlmann, which are housed in the Archives and Rare Books Library’s Urban Studies Collection. Continue reading →

Camp Washington Chili in the Urban Studies Collection

This past summer, Lilia Walsh, who is the 2009-2010 intern in the Archives & Rare Books Library, took an Honors Seminar at the University of Cincinnati entitled Envisioning the City. The focus of the course was how artists, writers, cartographers, photographers and others have visually portrayed cities from the 15^th century to the present, using the holdings of ARB’s rare books collection and its Urban Studies Collection. One of the experiential assignments given to the students in the seminar involved the practice of “lurking.”
