This summer, Langsam Library was a busy place as over 4,000 incoming students participating in UC New Student Orientation visited and learned about all that UC Libraries has to offer. While here, they engaged in activities designed to be entertaining while at the same time informative about the various research resources, assistance, and library services they can take advantage of when they return in the fall.

The students participated in fun and interactive activities such as writing on the information chalkboard, watching a video about the Student Technology Resources Center (STRC), located library resources in the catalog, and taking a walking tour of the 5th floor of the library where they found a book in the stacks and learned about UCit@Langsam, the 24-hour computer and study area.

Need A Caffeine Boost while Studying for Exams?

Understanding the need to refuel while studying in the library, UC Libraries have installed two coffee vending machines in Langsam Library. One is located by the main entrance on the 4^th floor of the library and the second is located in the UCit@Langsam 24/7 lab.

A 12oz cup only costs $1.50. The machines will accept Bearcat Cards, cash, and coin for payment. They are serviced and maintained by the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission.

Student Project Shows Value of Libraries

Librarians are used to getting any kind of questions and requests at the InfoCommons. However we were pleasantly surprised when one day student Ashley Kraus approached us with a question about UC Libraries. She wanted to get all kinds of facts and numbers about libraries. Ashley explained that she needed to do a visual project for a class assignment. We were delighted that with any topic in the world to choose from, Ashley chose to demonstrate the value of libraries. Following is more about her work.

“My name is Ashley Kraus and I am currently an English major in the LCS track here at the University of Cincinnati. This infographic was a project for my Rhetoric and Professional Writing class with Professor Laura Wilson, who allowed us to pick any topic we wanted. Since my career plans include going into library science, I felt it would be interesting to focus on information in that area. My main goal in creating this infographic was to provide UC students with some information about what the UC Libraries have to offer. There is great information and resources on the library website, so I incorporated links in the info graphic to provide quick access to that information. I enjoyed working on this project and am grateful to the Langsam Library staff for their help and recommendations.”

Study Late in Langsam Library

Langsam Library to Offer Extended Exam Hours until 2am.

After the regular Langsam Library hours, library space only will be open for students to study until 2am during exams. To enter the library after the regular closing time, students must do so via the 5^th floor UCit@Langsam card-swipe entrance (a valid UC ID is required).

Please note: no library staff or services requiring staff assistance will be available after the regular closing time (with the exception of UCit@Langsam); however, security will be present thanks to UC’s Public Safety. After 2am, students will be asked to go to UCit@Langsam to remain in the library.

As always, please be safe when leaving the library no matter what the hour. UC offers NightRide to get students home safely:

NightRide will be available Sunday – Wednesday 8pm-12 midnight and Thursday – Saturday 8pm-2am during this extended hour time period. The pickup for students is at the base of the Langsam/ERC steps on Woodside Drive. NightRide can be reached at 556-RIDE or students can speak to the Langsam Security Officer before exiting the building and they will contact NightRide.
