The DAAP Library is getting new clear story windows above the main reading room area (on the 5th-level) so we’re under construction…again. Next week – all new windows upstairs!

On the main (500) level, there are two:

The Seminar Room at the DAAP Library

The Seminar Room: This instructional room seats 25-30 and is equipped with HD projection & a sound system, a new DVD/VHS player, and PC that you can use or disconnect to connect your own Mac or PC. The Seminar Room should be booked in advance by visiting or calling the main desk in the DAAP Library (556-1335).

The Eames Room at the DAAP Library

The Eames Room: As an homage to famed designers, Charles & Ray Eames, this room is fully appointed with Eames furniture manufactured by Herman Miller and Vitra. This room seats 12 and is also equipped with projection & sound, a DVD/VHS player, and a PC that you can use or disconnect to connect your own Mac or PC. You may reserve this room by signing up on the weekly sign-up sheet hanging outside the room itself, otherwise, it’s first come, first serve.

On the upper (600) level, there are two more rooms for your use:

The DAAPThinks Tank: This room is appointed with George Nelson chairs, an Eames table, and seats 12. You may reserve this room by signing up on the weekly sign-up sheet hanging outside the room itself, otherwise, it’s first come, first serve.

The Special Collection Reading Room at the DAAP Library

The Special Collections Reading Room: Like the DAAPThinks Tank, this room is appointed with George Nelson chairs, an Eames table, and seats 12. You may reserve this room by signing up on the weekly sign-up sheet hanging outside the room itself, otherwise, it’s first come, first serve.

In this issue, you can read Victoria A. Montavon’s Farewell Message as she steps down from being the Dean and University Librarian for the past 11 years. She reflects on some of the many changes that have occured in the Libraries during her tenure and the enjoyment she has found working with a library faculty and staff who share her commitment to providing the best possible libraries for the UC community.

This volume also features the STRC renovation currently underway that will provide an open, comfortable, and high-tech environment in the center of Langsam Library’s fourth floor for students to work on an array of technology projects.

In an article that highlights the value of library collections, a blog post from former Archives and Rare Books Library student assistant Lauren Fink, a junior percussion performance major, discusses how her work in that library provided her with an exciting opportunity to pursue her academic passion.

Saturday & Sunday 4-5pm:  Artists’ Book Making. A hands-on session led by Jennifer Krivickas, the Head of the DAAP Library.

College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) Library

The College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) Library, located at 800 Baldwin Hall, invites new students to stop by during “Welcome Weekend,” Saturday & Sunday, August 25 & 26.  We will be open 1:00 – 5:00 pm each day. Meet CEAS Library staff over coffee & treats.  Enjoy a special short tour of the library (event times below).  Learn about: textbooks on reserve, computing & scanning resources, group & individual study spaces, and our extensive collection of books, e-books, e-journals & databases in engineering and applied science.
