Farewell and Best Wishes to Janice Schulz

By Kevin Grace

A couple of weeks ago, we notified the University of Cincinnati Libraries staff that our friend and colleague, Janice Schulz, will be leaving the Archives & Rare Books Library.  Janice’s last day will be this Friday, the 17th, and she just gets the weekend off before starting an exciting new position in Dayton with CareSource as the Records and Information Manager.  It is a wonderful opportunity for Janice, and we certainly wish her well, but we are very sad that she is leaving.  She has been a consummate professional, and an exceptional co-worker.  Based on her work at UC, Janice will definitely excel in her new job.

Janice began working in the Archives & Rare Books Library in March 2006.  She came from the Public Library and armed with knowledge of records maintenance and a great deal of energy, she solidified the Records Management Program for the university and carried it forward in several new directions.  Her personality allowed her to work effectively with everyone at UC in a positive manner, and we can boast of one of the best academic records management programs in the nation.  Beyond that, Janice also worked on several Libraries committees, including the Staff Advisory Board, the Exhibits Committee, and the Web Development Committee.  And, she has been a mainstay at Books by the Banks since its inception.  In her half-dozen years at UC, Janice also completed a second bachelor’s degree (in History, to complement her degree in Business) and was a key member of the Ohio Electronic Records Commission.  Very noteworthy, too, is her achievement in earning a Certified Records Manager designation through ARMA International. She is the only one in Ohio that works in colleges and universities.

Lest this all sounds like a eulogy, it isn’t – just a heartfelt farewell and good luck.  Please join ARB in acknowledging Janice’s great work on Friday at 3:00.  We’ll have some cake, some conversation, and say goodbye.  Most of all, we’ll say thanks for her collegiality and outstanding service.  Her job is in Dayton, but Janice will still be in the Cincinnati area, and you will probably run into her at Books by the Banks this fall where she will be volunteering again.
