2012 National African American Read-In Event, Display and Guide

The National African American Read-In (NAARI) event strives to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month by hosting and coordinating read-ins in every community. Come enjoy a free buffet lunch of Southern specialties while listening to selected works from African American authors, including some of the UC Blue Ash faculty, staff and students.

The NAARI CampusGuide  was created in conjunction with UC Blue Ash College’s National African American Read-In event and is also  at http://guides.libraries.uc.edu/ucba-naari. This guide represents selected “Must Read” Books by African American Authors (recommended by Black Caucus Members of the National Council of Teachers of English, and compiled by Sandra E. Gibbs) and additional items that are available via UC Libraries.

The NAARI book display is available for browsing and borrowing in the reference area of the UCBA Library. The display features works by African American authors in a variety of  genres. Volunteer readers are encouraged to browse and choose a selection to read from for the event.

Volunteer to Read

Students, staff and faculty can participate in this exciting event by volunteering to read aloud a short passage (2-3 minutes or less) by an African American author.

Volunteers readers can obtain a reading in the following ways:

  • Bring your own short reading by a favorite African American author.
  • Choose from a variety of readings compiled by the event committee located in the Writing and Study Skills Center. These selections are available to faculty, staff, & students.
  • Borrow a title from the UCBA Library’s NAARI display.
  • Use the NAARI CampusGuide to find and request items available at other UC Libraries.

Volunteers can sign up here.  A brief list of reader instructions will be sent out once the volunteer list has been compiled. In addition, volunteers will enjoy a complimentary lunch on the day of the Read-In and receive a commemorative bookmark.
