Library Instruction Options

Hands-on | Workshops | Guides | Presentations | Online Assistance| Consultation | Chat

Librarians can provide a variety of instruction programs for you and your students. Review the various options listed below to find the right program for your class.

Hands-on instruction

This is the best way to teach research skills as it provides learners with hands-on experiences using library resources.  We have found that the following scenarios work best for general undergraduate classes.

Workshops

University Libraries offers workshops for students during the quarter. Check the Workshop schedule for up-to-date information.  However, workshops are limited and may not fit the student’s schedule.

Course research guides

A course research guide is ideal to use in combination with a hands-on session, as it serves as both a teaching tool and an instructional resource students can return to after the session. Course research guides can be linked to your Blackboard site, distributed in class as a handout, or made available through our course guides page. You can request a subject guide for your class or assignemnt.

Classroom presentations

This is a good option for working with large classes, especially if time/resources do not allow smaller breakout sessions.

Online assistance

The How Do I... section of the University Libraies Web site provides links to help pages, tutorials, and lists of resources compiled by UC and OhioLINK librarians and providers of popular databases and services.

One-on-one student/librarian consultations

This option must be booked in advance.  In this case, the librarian provides direct assistance to the student.  Please consult a list of subject specialists for the appropriate contact.

Chat reference

Chat reference provides online "real-time" reference assistance with an OhioLINK librarian.  This option helps students with an immediate need, as it can be accessed from campus or home.  Chat with a librarian is a great resource for general questions. Try it!
