Tips to Reducing (and alternatives to) Printing
How to Save, E-mail, or Print Preview Documents in University Libraries
Note: Most of these functions are available from the File menu. To gain access to the File menu, click on the Restore button in the top-right corner of the title bar located between the Minimize and Maximize buttons. This will restore the menu toolbar where the File menu is accessible.
Tips:
Save the document to a disk.
Floppy and zip drives are available in all libraries. CD drives
are available in Langsam Library, the Engineering Library, and Info
Commons.
- Select File - Save As - Select either A:\ or D:\
E-mail the document (or URL) to yourself for later access.
Select File - Send - Page by E-mail - Then supply your e-mail address to the Outlook Express To: field.
Use Print Preview.
Often blank pages will be included at the end of a Web site and
other documents. Print Preview can help you to identify and print
only the pages you want. Note: This option is not available in all
locations.
- Select File - Print Preview - Print (This will launch the Print Dialog, where you may select the exact pages or range you would like to print).
Cut and paste only the information you need into a word
processor.
Note: Notepad is available on the Info Commons workstations only.
- Using the mouse, highlight the information to copy - Press Control C - Open Notepad - Press Control V to copy the information.
Write small amounts of information (such as library call numbers, phone numbers, etc.) on scratch paper.
Read documents directly on the screen.
Complete editing online to avoid printing multiple drafts.
Collaborate. Create a Web site to share information with
others in your project group or class.
Note: The STRC, located in Langsam Library, can assist students
with creating Web sites.
Ask others to provide materials to you in electronic format - and do the same for them (e.g. class notes, e-mail, and other non-copyrighted material).
Avoid printing e-mail messages and Web pages.
Choose duplex (i.e., double-sided) printing.
Notes: Available in Langsam Library only excluding UCit computer
labs. This will still count as two prints on your account, but it
will save paper.
- Select File - Print (pulls up the Print Dialog Box) - Click the Finishing tab at the top of the Print Dialog Box - Find where it says Print on Both Sides (Duplex), and click the box to select - Click Print
