Xuemao Wang Named to Board of Directors for the Center for Research Libraries
June 24, 2013 – Xuemao Wang, dean and university librarian at the University of Cincinnati, has been named to the Board of Directors for the Center for Research Libraries. Wang will serve a three-year term ending in 2016.
The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) is an international consortium of university, college, and independent research libraries. Founded in 1949, CRL supports advanced research and teaching in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences by preserving and making available to scholars the primary source material critical to those disciplines.
CRL acquires and preserves newspapers, journals, documents, archives, and other traditional and digital resources from a global network of sources. Most materials acquired are from outside the United States, and many are from five “emerging” regions of the world: Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Latin America.
The Board is the governing body of CRL. Standing committees conduct and review much of the research, development, and planning that informs the decision-making of the full Board. Committee assignments draw upon the talents and expertise of individual Board members and other representatives of CRL libraries. Wang’s first assignment with CRL will focus on global initiatives with a concentration on expanding CRL’s partnership in Hong Kong and China.
One such project that Wang may be involved in is the Global Resources initiative, a collaboration of CRL and higher academic research institutions to support international studies through the preservation and exchange of knowledge and source materials. Global Resources fosters, supports, and coordinates activities among North American and overseas participants to build new collections and enhance access to existing resources.
“My membership on the CRL Board will give UC Libraries not only more opportunities to collaborate with our colleagues throughout the CRL existing member libraries, but also increase UC Libraries global visibility and engagement among CRL’s growing international partners, “ said Wang. “I look forward to bringing my experience in both libraries and global initiatives to work with CRL.”
