September 4, 2007 - A decade of The News Record, the University of Cincinnati’s student newspaper, is now available online. The University of Cincinnati Alumni Association generously provided funding through the MasterCard Grant program for University Libraries to digitize The News Record from September 1960 through July 1970.
Available at http://digitalprojects.libraries.uc.edu/newsrecord/index.asp, and accessible through several points on the University Libraries Web site, each scanned issue of The News Record can be viewed in its entirety. The issues are also searchable by keyword and by phrase.
In a decade that saw the 150th anniversary of the university and the national championships of Bearcat basketball, The News Record covered these stories and more. Visitors to the site can read about campus events, fraternity and sorority news, and student elections, in addition to national stories that had a dramatic impact on UC such as the Kennedy assassination, student protests against the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and a visit to Cincinnati from Presidential hopeful Richard M. Nixon.
The digitization project was a collaborative effort of the Digital Projects Department and The Archives and Rare Books Library. “We truly appreciate the opportunity to make this decade of The News Record widely available to the UC community and friends throughout the world,” said Victoria A. Montavon, Dean and University Librarian. “In the future, we hope to secure additional funding to digitize further decades.”-- ### --
