Lecture by Peter Ifland: “Home Safe and Dry: How Travelers
and Explorers Found Their October 6 , 2004 - University Libraries’ Off the Page Lecture Series presents "Home Safe and Dry: How Travelers and Explorers Found Their Way Home by the Stars," a talk by Peter Ifland, a celestial navigation expert. The lecture, to be held Thursday, October 14 at 3pm in the Archives and Rare Books Department in Blegen Library, is free and open to the public.
Ifland, author of the book Taking the Stars: Celestial Navigation from Argonauts to Astronauts, became interested in celestial navigation while serving as a deck officer in the United States Navy. Drawn to the handsome aesthetics of the ebony and brass octants and sextants, Dr. Ifland began collecting hand-held navigation instruments in the 1970s while working in Belgium. He also has an interest in the navigators, astronomers, and master craftsmen who influenced the evolution of navigation instruments and techniques.
The Off the Page Lectures Series, sponsored by the Friends of University Libraries, puts on approximately three lectures a year to promote and highlight the collections of University Libraries.
