JULY 30, 2003 - Preliminary figures gathered for Spring Quarter show printing at University of Cincinnati public computers in labs and libraries is down over 70% following the installation of Uniprint print management software earlier this year by the UC Office of Information Technologies (UCit), University Libraries, Medical Center Academic Information Technology & Libraries (AIT&L), University College, and the College of Pharmacy.
Implemented along with the new print management software was a charge to print. Since February, printing has cost $.07 a page, which is among the lowest at any university surveyed. The standard charge among most universities is $.10 a page. In addition, each UC student receives at least 100 free black-and-white prints per quarter.
A university-wide communication campaign, “Think Before You Print,” detailed the new print procedures and encouraged users to reduce printing. The university believed printing could be reduced by 40%, saving 1,130 trees annually. Users have well surpassed that goal, reducing printing in all areas by at least 50%.
"The numbers show that the Uniprint print management system has reduced waste," said Tom Koerner, chair of the University’s Print Management Steering Committee. “The UC community is more aware of the costs of printing to the University, themselves, and the environment."
The University created a Web site that details the new print procedures,
answers frequently asked questions, and provides links to more information
on using Uniprint.
