What is evidence based medicine?

ACP Journal Club Evidence Based Medicine for Better Patient Care selects from the biomedical literature those articles reporting original studies and systematic reviews that warrant immediate attention by physicians attempting to keep pace with important advances in internal medicine. These articles are summarized in "value added" abstracts and commented on by clinical experts. As of May 20th 2008 ACP Journal Club is a monthly feature in the Annals of Internal Medicine. ACP Journal Club will continue to provide summaries of new health care research. For the present, it will be accessible directly and also in the Annals of Internal Medicine. ACPJC PLUS is a new product, complementing ACP Journal Club and available to ACP members through www.acponline.org

ACP's PIER: The Physicians' Information and Education Resource w/ AHFS Dl Essentials is a point-of-care, web-based decision-support tool that contains 425 modules that provide guidance and information on more than 300 diseases and conditions. PIER modules also contain information on ethical and legal issues, complementary and alternative medicine, and screening, prevention and procedures. bmjupdates+ provides an educational service for practicing clinicians, designed to alert clinicians to important new research. It provides access to the best new research of relevance for clinical practice in the fields of general practice, primary care and internal medicine.110 core clinical journals are pre-rated for quality using explicit criteria. In addition, a minimum of 3 practicing physicians provide their assessments of the relevance and newsworthiness of the reports through an online review process using the McMaster Online Rating of Evidence (MORE). Physicians can register their areas of interest and receive email alerts tailored to their clinical interests. The cumulative database of pre-rated articles, dating back to 2002, is searchable. Initial registration for this free service is required.

Cochrane Library is a unique source of reliable and up-to-date information on the effects of interventions in health care. The Cochrane Library consists of a regularly updated collection of evidence-based medicine databases.

EBSCOhost MEDLINE with full text is a comprehensive source of full text for medical journals, providing full text for more than 1,370 journals indexed in MEDLINE. Of those, more than 1,340 have cover-to-cover indexing in MEDLINE. This wide-ranging file contains full text for many of the most used journals in the MEDLINE index - with no embargo. With full-text coverage dating back to 1965, MEDLINE with Full Text is the definitive research tool for medical literature.

eMedicine (Free access with registration) eMedicine is an authoritative and accessible point of care medical reference available to physicians and other health care professionals on the Internet. The evidence-based content, updated regularly by more than 8,000 attributed physician or health care provider authors and editors, provides the latest practice guidelines in 38 clinical areas. The eMedicine Clinical Knowledge Base contains articles on over 6,500 diseases and medical topics, and is richly illustrated with some 28,000 multimedia files.

Evidence Based Nursing surveys a wide range of international medical journals applying strict criteria for the quality and validity of research. Practising clinicians assess the clinical relevance of the best studies. The key details of these essential studies are presented in a succinct, informative abstract with an expert commentary on its clinical application.

MEDLINE (OhioLINK) will no longer be available after December 31, 2008. MEDLINE will remain available to the OhioLINK community in two versions — EBSCOhost MEDLINE and PubMed.

National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC) is a database of evidence based clinical practice guidelines and related documents, an initiative of the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ). The mission of the NGC is to provide objective information on clinical practice guidelines, linking to the full text guideline whenever possible.

Public Health Evidence Based Resources is a list of public health literature guideline resources based on the Public Health Databases list from the Evidence-Based Practice for Public Health (EBPPH) website.�

PubMed (1950 - present) PubMed is the National Library of Medicine's version of MEDLINE. Using this link to PubMed provides access to online journal articles to which Health Sciences Library subscribes. Look for the "University of Cincinnati Medical Center Libraries" button. PubMed Clinical Queries provides a special evidence based filter to help retrieve evidence based research in PubMed.

ScHARR: Netting the Evidence is a free, searchable list of EBM related resources. It is maintained by the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) University of Sheffield.

SUMSearch simultaneously searches multiple internet sites and presents the results by "breadth of discussion". SUMSearch adapts its searching according to the number of hits received from each site. SUMSearch will select the best internet sites to search and format the query for each site. It returns a list of results in descending order of complexity with systematic reviews and original research in the second half of the results. The majority of links come from: The National Library of Medicine (NLM), the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE) and the National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC).

Turning Research Into Practice (TRIP): is a free meta-search engine with emphasis on retrieval in evidence based resources Search results are displayed by publication type and by subject filters.

UpToDate is designed to provide concise, practical answers to clinical questions at the point of care.
